Spring Cleaning for your Body
Water – Mother Nature’s Gift
Spring has sprung! Traditionally this time of year lends itself to cleaning our most important possessions: the house, the garden, the car, boat or RV….and generally freshening things up. We want to get those chores done so we can enjoy the slower pace of Summer.
One important and often neglected part of the Spring cleaning ritual is our own body. In fact, it is arguably the most important part. Over a season or two of less activity, coupled with some important eating holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Easter, Passover etc.) the result can be added pounds, less energy, digestive problems and even more serious issues such as migraine headaches.
Mother Nature’s Spring cleaning foods
It’s a natural instinct to want to cleanse the body, and in fact Mother Nature provides certain foods at this time of year that are known for their detoxifying and cleansing properties. Asparagus, strawberries, artichokes and watercress are a few which appear in the Spring and have high levels of nutrients that boost Vitamin C levels (antioxidants) and are high in fiber to help the body eliminate accumulated toxins.
Most fruit and vegetables that appear early have similar properties. However, the most effective of all of Mother Nature’s detoxifying gifts is pure water. Preferably the kind that comes from underground springs loaded with minerals. Think glacial run off or mountain streams full of minerals.
Of course, we can’t always find this kind of water but the fact is, even tap water here in the Los Angeles area is pretty good! The important thing is to drink enough water and secondarily, to drink water at the right time. For example, in Japan it is a common habit to drink a few glasses of water upon awakening and to refrain from eating anything for 45 minutes after this point. The Japanese tend not to be overweight and are considered among the healthiest nations in the world. Is their water drinking habit the cause? It is a contributing factor at least.
It is a well documented fact that drinking a glass or two of water 30 minutes before meals can contribute to weight loss and improved digestion. Water increases metabolism and allows the body to maintain a correct Ph balance, all of which contributes to cleansing and better digestion.
While there are many cleanses on the market, one of the easiest and most effective ways to detox the body is to simply drink water. Replenishing what is lost through sweating, breathing and digesting food allows the body to do what it is programmed to do; keep itself clean.
How much water should I drink?
Most recommendations are that we drink 8 glasses per day but a more accurate measurement would be to drink half of your body weight in ounces per day. For example if you weigh 160 lbs, you would aim to drink 80 oz of water per day as a minimum. If you want to detox your body, the easiest thing to do is to drink lots of water.
Don’t like the taste of plain water?
Simply squeeze a slice of lemon in your water or use a fruit infusing water bottle to give a little flavor. Not only will you enjoy the taste, the cleansing properties of lemon will further enhance your detoxing experience. Have any questions?
